Waiting

Mom G's platelet count went above 100, so the docs performed the biopsy on Monday. We should know the preliminary report tomorrow, and a more indepth one by Friday. However, last night her potassium levels crashed because the diuretic she was on basically made her pee out all of her potassium, so they moved her to ICU until her potassium is back to a safe level. They also want to start her on warfarin, but to do that her platelets need to be at least at 150, and right now she's still barely over 100.

Eventually they'll have to let her come home, right? It's been a week and a half, and right now the docs are saying Monday at the earliest before she gets to leave. That's assuming nothing else goes awry.

Bean and I went to our town's Strawberry Festival yesterday. It takes place on the grounds of a fully restored Victorian mansion where you can take tours. There were vendors selling various wares, a display of antique cars, a band that played a mix of patriotic and old classic tunes such as "When You Wish Upon a Star"; and of course, strawberries. You could buy a dish of strawberries plain, with or without vanilla ice cream and/or shortcake, strawberry floats, frozen strawberry popsicle bars....yum. There was also a booth selling sandwiches and another selling hot dogs for those wanting something a bit more substantial with the strawberry offerings. We bought a crocheted dress for her Barbie dolls, an Origami Owl locket, and a bar of locally-made strawberry-scented soap that the business owners had created especially for the festival. Their other scents smelled divine, so I took a business card as well.

We visited Mom G at the hospital earlier this afternoon. Her platelet count is up to 98, so the docs are hopeful they will finally be able to do her lung biopsy either tomorrow or Tuesday. She's trying to stay in good spirits, but she's tired. There are people coming in around the clock for various reasons, which isn't exactly conducive to rest. We left after she'd finished lunch so she could try to take a quick nap.

Now, to finish laundry before dinner. We're having pizza tonight. I picked up Canadian bacon and fresh mozzarella to go on top alongside the hamburger already thawing at home.

Finally, finally finished moving my fic to Ao3. Well, except for some drabbles. I suppose I could move them, too. What's the harm?

Anyway, the work week from hell has finally ended. I sincerely hope next week starts on better footing, or else pharmacists and techs alike might go mad.

Tomorrow Bean and I are going to our town's local strawberry festival. After that we might go see Wonder Woman. Heck, I might take her anyway, only because I want to see Wonder Woman. I hear it's actually good for a DC film. (Yes, I'm a Marvel girl. I started late, but discovered X-Men during the Chris Claremont storyline days; and shipped Gambit/Rogue before I even knew shipping was a thing.)

Mom G's still hanging in there. Dad G says her platelet levels keep fluctuating because the new drug combo is still flushing out the effects the heparin had on her, and eventually they'll rise to 100 as the docs want so they can finally get around to doing the biopsy.

Also, I may have gotten a plotbunny for the first time in almost five years.

Well, I'm still slowly and steadily moving my old fics over to Ao3 (Bryonia_Alba, for those who don't yet know). I hadn't realized just how many I'd written during the years I was in fandom, well over a hundred. Not nearly as prolific as some, but a bit more than just a handful, LOL. There were stories I'd nearly forgotten I'd written, and some I'd forgotten just how much I actually liked after writing it, and some I'd forgotten I'd written that I actually liked after writing it.

It kinda makes me wonder who took up the Neville-promoting mantle after I left. Who writes the Neville-fic now?

Anyway. Bean, who is no longer a little girl and needs a new nickname, just finished fourth grade. Her latest passion is something on the internet called Country Balls, where different balls colored with various national flags interact with each other. She also collects rocks and gemstones, and reads encyclopedias for fun just like her mother did, back in the day.

Mom G is currently in the hospital, having tests run. They've already diagnosed a blood clot in one lung that they're treating with blood thinners; but there's a second spot on her lung that will be biopsied on Tuesday. That's the one we're all worried about, hoping it's not the C word.

Saw Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 with Bean and loved it. Thanks to last year's Comic-Con, she's quick to point out all of Stan Lee's cameos whenever we rewatch a Marvel film. Looking forward to seeing Wonder Woman with her as well.

Next month Bean, hubby, and I are going on our first official out-of-state vacation. Which exotic location did we select? Well, we're going to Omaha, Nebraska for a week. We're going to the zoo, to a Royals AAA farm team game, and taking a day trip to Lincoln to see the state university museum's gemstone exhibit. It should be fun!

A Peep of Thrones!

Today is Dad G.'s birthday. We're celebrating simply, grilling steaks, serving it with baked potatoes, and there's a chocolate ice cream cake in the freezer. Tonight, of course, I will be feverishly attempting to write my recalcitrant Beholder fic, and tomorrow is Easter. I hope Bean goes to sleep fairly early, because I still need to sneak out to the store to buy a helium Mylar balloon for her basket.

Today was the stereotypical sort of Monday where if something can go wrong it will. Our washer broke and it'll be at least a few days before we can buy a new one. Fortunately, we all have enough clothes to get us through the week.

I also had a plate break in my hand while I was rinsing it for the dishwasher. Fortunately, I only got a little cut on one finger.

However, the weekend trip to Joplin was fun. Hubby's youngest cousin is getting married in May, and her bridal shower was this past weekend. Her older sister is seven months pregnant and due in May. She's also the matron of honor, and when we asked her if there was a Plan B in case she had her baby the same time as the wedding, she said the plan was to just go on without her. As it stands, we'll probably have her baby shower the day after her sister's wedding, so out of town family won't have to make separate trips. Both sisters seem cool with that, which I suppose is the important thing.

We got a tour of what Joplin looks like now, nearly one year after the tornado ripped through. Many of the businesses have rebuilt or are in the process of being rebuilt, but we saw the pile of rubble where the high school used to be and the skeleton of the hospital, which is also in the process of demolition. There were blocks and blocks of empty foundation lots, dotted with the occasional rebuilt or rebuilding home. The trees had been snapped off, but it was both inspiring and strange to see them with spindly new branches and new green leaves on many of them. The family said people still show up every weekend to help with construction and cleanup, and that sales of storm shelters are understandably brisk. They also said they won't take tornado warning sirens for granted again.

I got an extension for my Beholder fic. I have until Saturday to finish it.

I also haven't yet watched last night's season opener for Game of Thrones. I'll do that after I've put Bean to bed.

I know I haven't posted much lately. There really hasn't been much to tell other than the usual routine of school and housework. I did get some dental work done and ended up with an upper denture plate that I'm still getting used to.

Also, it seems our cat Sunny has also taken the house next door as part of his domain. Our neighbor told me she was in their master bath and happened to glance over into the bedroom to find Sunny stretched out on their dresser, fast asleep. They have two cats and a beagle, and he has sufficiently intimidated them (the cats, not the people) enough that he eats their food and uses their litter box whenever he likes. No wonder he's gotten so fat! Our neighbor also said that Sunny doesn't allow them to hold or pet him, so at least we keep that privilege. I wonder what he'll do once the weather warms up enough to turn the A/C on and he can't get into their house as easily as he can now, where everyone has their doors and windows open to enjoy the fine weather.

And fine weather it is, too. The entire month of March has been in the 70s and 80s, and spring has erupted in earnest. If the weather holds and we don't end up with a freak Easter snowstorm, this winter will officially go down in our area's history as the one with the least snow ever. We had less than four inches total.

Dad G and I got our garden tilled and ready for planting this past weekend. We picked up some flower seeds for Bean and planted them in a big terra cotta pot. She woke up this morning, got dressed, and went to look at her planter, and then started to cry because there weren't any flowers. We had to explain that flowers didn't just spring up overnight, but she's still dubious. I hope the darn things germinate quickly!

wizard_love had their reveals and I can now admit to writing Hush, which is Neville/Ginny and NC-17.

Speaking of Neville/Ginny, florahart is writing a series of ficlets prior to her birthday, and wrote the lovely ficlet Two Forward, One to the Side for me! Go forth, read, and give love!

And, um, yeah. That's what I've been up to.

Wow, it's hard to believe that the wait is nearly over, and in just over six weeks the second season of Game of Thrones will begin airing! Some of the folks at Yahoo!TV posted a gallery containing a few stills from the new season, which left me all asquee.

Stannis and Melisandre!

Brienne of Tarth!

I also received my assignment at hp_beholder. It's my first time writing for that particular fest, and participating along with so many high-caliber authors has me nervous. My recipient is a lovely person though, and I shall strive to do right by hir.

I also picked up a prompt at hprarefest. There are plenty of prompts left for claiming of both the het and slash varieties, and it's not due until May. Besides, considering that so many other prompt-based fests often turn into unofficial Drarry and Dramione celebrations with a few scraps thrown in for fans of other pairings, following this one will be a breath of fresh air.

Also! My gift fic posted at hpvalensmut yesterday, and it's adorable!

Percy Weasley and the Phwee Plant is Neville/Percy, rated light R. Summary: Percy has to take care of a very odd plant. It is an easy task, but things get complicated when the plant becomes sick.

The plant in question has a personality of its own, and its interaction with Percy plus its role in bringing him together with Neville makes for a sweet and charming read. Go and give it some love!

Also! Posting began today at wizard_love, kicking off with a sexy Marcus/Katie fic.

I have my dysfuncentine fic to finish and submit tonight, and then I can begin plotting for HP_Beholder.

Finally, if I can't rant here, where can I rant? Seriously dude, if you find out we've got Video Teen staying with us this weekend, DON'T try to get your own stepson invited over for the weekend as well. That sort of brazen assumption will not (and did not) go over well at all here at Chez G.

Hmph.

Hooray!

Holy cow, Matt Lewis has grown up nicely! He's finished filming The Syndicate and is about to begin filming Wasteland. I am still waiting for someone to film a movie where he costars with Clive Owen as his father. This needs to be done!

Another Sunday, another minimum four loads of laundry. *yawn* My predictable life, let me show you it.

Tonight we tried leeks, as part of a hash with red potatoes and pancetta. It was good, and this time even Dad G liked it, although next time I plan to dial waaaay back on the red pepper flakes. The recipe called for one tablespoon, I used half that in the recipe, and it was still a bit too much on the spicy side for our family's tamer tastes. I think next time I'll use maybe half a teaspoon, which should be enough to give the dish heat without it feeling like swallowing a blowtorch. The recipe also had paprika and thyme, so it's not as though it will lack any seasoning whatsoever.

(Yes, we are wusses.)

Anyhoo, remember the half-grown kitten we adopted last summer? He's not nearly so little anymore. In fact, I'm tempted to rename him Garfield!

Eight loads of laundry and other assorted house chores later, tired Bry is tired. I'm taking a shower and going straight to bed as soon as the 49ers-Giants game is over (go Niners!).

Last week, I brought up the idea of trying new foods, or foods we didn't like as children but would be willing to try again as adults if they were prepared differently. Mom G was all for it, Dad G and hubby were more skeptical but game. I picked a recipe, and tonight we had kale (which no one has had before) with roasted beets (food I hated as a child prepared a different way) and bacon.

Mom G and I liked it (I like roasted beets, yay!). Bean didn't like the kale but ate the beets, but she's always liked beet pickles so I wasn't surprised. Hubby ate some and said it wasn't bad, but he wasn't exactly enthusiastic in his endorsement either. Dad G took one look and refused to even try it.

*sigh*

Mom G and I have a not-so-private joke that if our boys weren't around we'd have a much better, more varied diet instead of the usual meat and potatoes fare. Veggie-wise, hubby won't eat anything outside of peas, green beans, corn, carrots, and tomatoes. Dad G will eat those along with broccoli and cauliflower, but that's it. No vegetarian dishes, tofu is a four-letter word, and experimenting with food is looked upon with deep suspicion.

So the kale-and-beet dish was pretty much split down the middle, with the women for and the men against, and Bean divided between liking the beets and not liking the kale. Pfft, I may make it again anyway, and serve a more conventional veggie alongside.

Here's the recipe in question:

Kale with Roasted Beets and Bacon

2 beets
1 tablespoon olive oil
Salt and freshly ground pepper
6 slices thick-cut bacon
1 large bunch kale, washed, stemmed, and cut into 1-inch pieces
1/3 cup low-sodium chicken stock
4 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.

Wash and trim the beets, removing both ends. Place them on a 12-inch square sheet of heavy-duty aluminum foil. Drizzle with the olive oil and season generously with salt and pepper. Seal up the foil packet and roast until the beets are fork-tender, about 1 hour.

In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the bacon until crisp. Transfer the bacon to a paper towel-lined plate. Increase the heat to high and add the kale, stirring to coat in the rendered bacon grease. Cover and cook for a few minutes, and then add the chicken stock and 2 tablespoons of the vinegar. Stir to combine, cover and allow to wilt for 6-8 minutes.

Peel and cut the beets into chunks and add them to the kale. Stir in the remaining 2 tablespoons vinegar. Crumble and add the bacon, stir to combine and season with salt and pepper. Serve immediately.

Serves 4-6.

This journal has no material today in protest of SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act), the bills which will allow the government censor the intenet. I am sure everyone knows that Wikipedia, Mozilla, Wordpress, and hundreds of other sites are going dark today in protest of the bills, which could be used to shut down all material on the web not generated by corporations with big money lawyers -- affecting everything from whether we can get unbiased news reports to how we share our own news and photos with friends. 2011 was a reaaaaaaalllllly slow fic year for me. Compared to 2010 where I wrote three drabbles, fifteen ficlets, and twelve fics, in 2011 I wrote a grand total of...three stories.

Three. Four, if you count a retooled story I originally wrote in 2009.

Yeah, it was an off year. There were no additions to Neville's stable of conquests, either. Most tragically, I wrote no Neville/Ginny last year. If nothing else, that will hopefully change this year.

On to the (short) list of fic!

Making a Splash, (Neville/Lavender, NC-17), written for ozma_katiebell for wizard_love 2011. When her date with Neville turns potentially disastrous, Lavender finds a way to salvage the evening.

Lavender Fields Forever, (Neville/Lavender, NC-17), written for starrika for smutty_claus 2011. Lavender became something of a workaholic after the war. Fortunately, a certain professor teaches her how to stop and smell the flowers again.

Mermaid's Suede, (Charlie/Neville, NC-17), written for kabal42 for daily_deviant's Kinky Kristmas 2011. It was difficult to imagine such an affable bloke being so, well, kinky, if Charlie hadn’t witnessed it firsthand.

The tweaked fic was The Naming of Direwolves, (Jon Snow and his siblings, gen, G). Jon Snow and his trueborn siblings feed their direwolf pups and decide on names.

So that closes the book on a dismal writing year. We'll see if this one improves at all!

I have never been a clotheshorse. I will buy enough to get me through the week and wear them until they fall apart. A fashionista, I am not.

Therefore, it was probably a good thing I received two new pairs of corduroy pants for Christmas. I was wearing one of my old pairs last night, sat down to check me e-mail, and Rrrrriiiip. This morning I was wearing another old pair, and the exact same thing happened. Rrrriiiip. Same place and everything. So now I have two pairs of pants to cut up for the ragbag, and fortunately there are two shiny new pairs to take their place!

Today was spent baking another batch of cranberry orange scones, along with a batch of blueberry muffins. I need to go buy more sour cream now. I still have oranges and dried cranberries left! On the other hand, I found a recipe for cranberry curd. Maybe if I make that along with some shortbread tomorrow...? *ponders* Or there's always snickerdoodles. I haven't made those for a while.

The playoff game between the Saints and the 49ers today was absolutely epic! The 49ers scored the winning touchdown with nine seconds left in the game, a 17-yard pass in coverage, and a brilliant catch. Much as I adore my Chiefs, it was the Joe Montana-led 49ers of the '80s that made me a football fan, and I will always have a soft spot for them.

Condolences to the Saints fans on my f-list. It really was an awesome game.

Well, that's what happens when you lose internet for a few days...all sorts of stuff happens, and once you get it back there's nuthin.

So, today you get All the Things that happened last week!

For instance, Bean's favorite vegetable is carrots. I asked her if she wanted to help me make carrot soup, and she said yes. So I tried a new recipe for Curried Carrot Soup. She wasn't fond of the results and didn't eat more than a few bites (so much for the reasoning that having kids help in the kitchen will expand their culinary appetites), but I thought it was delicious and will probably make it again.

Also, last Thursday in class we all played with syringes and needles, and I didn't pass out or anything! True, none of them were exactly pointed in my direction, which definitely helped. But we practiced reconstituting vials and drawing up the contents into the syringes before injecting them into IV bags. It's the type of activity pharm techs typically perform in a hospital or long-term care institution rather than in a retail setting, but it was still good knowledge to have.

I also made a batch of cranberry orange scones. There was a ton of good fruit sales last week, so I picked up strawberries, blueberries, bananas, kiwi fruit, and oranges, and whipped up a fruit salad. Apparently I wasn't the only one jonesing for fresh fruit, because the rest of the family devoured it. I still have oranges and blueberries left, and will probably make another batch of scones and some blueberry muffins this weekend, and take them in to school next week as study fuel. Midterms are next week, and at the moment I am NOT failing algebra! *\o/*

Also, reveals happened for the two holiday fests I participated in, and I can now thank the lovely people who created their fantastic gifts for me!

Firstly, I must thank nightfalltwen for her incredible Neville/Lavender fic The Right Recipe, which is not only a gloriously romantic story, it also includes links scattered throughout the fic, all going to delicious-sounding recipes like gingerbread and cream scones. If you haven't already, go, read, and give love!

Secondly, I must thank its_art for the sizzling Neville/Ginny artwork These aren't your usual Christmas crackers she drew for me for daily_deviant's Kinky Kristmas! It's hot and cool, and I love Neville's impish expression and Ginny's pose. It's lovely, so take a look and leave more praise!

Incidentally, I also committed fic, both of which I've reposted to my fic journals.

I wrote the Charlie/Neville fic Mermaid's Suede for kabal42 for Kinky Kristmas.

I wrote the Neville/Lavender fic Lavender Fields Forever for starrika for smutty_claus.

On a less happy note, this week we've begun the process of arranging for speech therapy for Bean. She's an intelligent little girl, but while she understands what's being said to her, she's fallen further behind her peers in actual speech and vocabulary, which is affecting her social development. Hopefully by getting her into a speech program we can make noticeable progress by the time she starts kindergarten later this year. I was the same way when I was her age, but I really wish she hadn't inherited her speech/social inadequacies from me! Wish us luck!

I submitted my Valensmut fic last night, so now I just need to come up with a plotbunny for the prompt I picked up at Wizard Love.

We also had our second dusting of snow two days ago. So far this winter we've had less than an inch of snow total, which is unusual. Poor Bean is so anxious for a real snowstorm!

Bean returned to school today; I go back tomorrow. She was happy to go back, greeted her teachers cheerfully, started playing right away. We're still a year or so away before the back-to-school groans kick into high gear.

I was mostly lazy today, although I did box up some of Bean's old clothes to give to Goodwill. Tomorrow I need to clean out the closet and see what else I can donate. There are several outfits I can give away that haven't fallen apart, and others I can rip up for the rag bag.

The holiday fests have finished posting. I'm fairly predictable, but I'll toss it out there anyway: Who can guess what I wrote for Smutty Claus and Kinky Kristmas?

I'd make a year-end fic post, but I only wrote three stories all year, none of which were all that great. I suppose I might make one anyway, despite the extremely short list, just for the sake of posterity.
